Manicure and pedicure services are essential components of cosmetology that contribute significantly to personal grooming and client satisfaction. In Kenya's beauty industry, professionals who excel in these services enhance the reputation of salons and spas by delivering hygienic, aesthetic, and therapeutic treatments. Proper client preparation is fundamental to achieving successful outcomes and ensuring client comfort and safety throughout the service. This chapter focuses on the systematic approach to preparing clients for manicure and pedicure services within the Kenyan cosmetology context.

2.1 Client Preparation

Client preparation is the work done on the client's hands or feet before the main manicure or pedicure. It covers consultation, sanitising, inspecting the nails and skin, removing old polish, and then trimming, filing and buffing the nails into a clean, even shape. Good preparation makes the treatment safe and comfortable and gives a smooth base for polish or gel. Example: before a pedicure, a nail technician sanitises the client's feet, checks the toenails for signs of infection, removes old polish, then trims, files and buffs the nails ready for the treatment.

Trimming

Trimming is cutting the free edge of the nail to the length the client wants with nail clippers or nail scissors. It removes excess length quickly before filing, and must be done carefully so the nail is not cut too short or torn. Fingernails can be trimmed to follow their natural curve, while toenails are cut straight across to help prevent ingrown toenails. Example: a client with long, uneven toenails has them cut straight across to just above the tip of the toe before filing.

  1. Confirm the length: agree the finished length and shape with the client before cutting.
  2. Choose the tool: use disinfected nail clippers or nail scissors suited to the nail thickness.
  3. Support the finger or toe: hold it firmly but gently so it does not move while cutting.
  4. Cut in small sections: take small cuts across the free edge instead of one large cut, which can split the nail.
  5. Leave a little length: cut slightly longer than the final length, so filing can perfect the shape.
  6. Cut toenails straight across: avoid cutting down into the corners of toenails.
  7. Check the edge: look for jagged or sharp points that need filing.

Filling

Filing is shaping and smoothing the free edge of the nail with a nail file or emery board after trimming. It gives the nail its final shape and removes rough edges that could snag or split. The file is stroked in one direction from the side towards the centre, because sawing back and forth weakens the nail and causes peeling. Example: a client asks for oval fingernails, so the technician files each side towards the centre until all ten nails have the same rounded shape.

Common nail shapes
  • Square: Straight across the free edge with sharp corners, suited to strong nails.
  • Squoval: Square shape with softly rounded corners, which resist breaking.
  • Round: Follows the curve of the fingertip, suited to short nails.
  • Oval: Rounded sides tapering to a curved tip, which makes fingers look longer.
  • Almond: Narrow tapered sides with a rounded point, suited to longer nails.
Procedure for filing
  1. Select the file: use a fine-grit file for natural nails and a coarser file only for thick toenails or artificial nails.
  2. Hold the file at a slight angle: keep it just under the free edge so the edge is smooth, not sharp.
  3. File from side to centre: stroke in one direction only, from each side towards the centre.
  4. Shape evenly: check each nail against the others so all are the same length and shape.
  5. Smooth the sides: lightly file the side walls of the free edge without filing into the nail fold.
  6. Remove filing dust: brush the dust off the nails with a clean nail brush.

Buffing

Buffing is smoothing the surface of the nail plate with a buffer to remove ridges and stains and to produce a natural shine. It improves the look of unpolished nails and helps polish lie smoothly, but over-buffing thins and weakens the nail. Multi-sided buffer blocks have sides of different grit, used from coarser to finer. Example: a client who prefers no polish has her nails buffed to a natural shine, finishing with the smoothest side of the buffer.

  1. Check the nail plate: look for ridges, stains or thin areas before starting.
  2. Choose the buffer: use a multi-sided buffer block suited to natural nails.
  3. Smooth ridges: use the coarser side lightly over ridged areas only.
  4. Refine the surface: move to the finer side to remove scratches left by the coarser side.
  5. Shine: use the smoothest side in light, quick strokes to bring up a shine.
  6. Avoid overheating: do not stay too long on one spot, as heat and friction cause discomfort and thinning.
  7. Remove dust: brush off dust before polish or the next stage.

Importance of client preparation

  • Hygiene and infection control: Sanitising the client's hands or feet reduces micro-organisms before tools touch the skin.
  • Assessment of client needs: Checking the skin type and nail condition allows the right products and techniques to be chosen.
  • Client comfort: Consultation, good seating and a calm atmosphere help the client relax.
  • Rapport: Talking with the client during preparation helps the technician understand and manage expectations.
  • Safety: Spotting conditions such as fungal infection, open cuts or diabetes allows the technician to avoid harm or refer the client.

Steps in preparing the client

  1. Greet and consult: welcome the client and ask about preferences, allergies and any health issues affecting the hands or feet.
  2. Seat and protect the client: seat the client comfortably and protect clothing with a towel.
  3. Sanitise hands or feet: apply a hand or foot sanitiser to reduce micro-organisms on the skin.
  4. Inspect nails and skin: look for damage, infection, dryness, calluses or irritation that may affect the treatment or require referral.
  5. Remove old products: remove polish with acetone or non-acetone remover, choosing the gentler type for weak or dry nails.
  6. Trim, file and buff: shape the nails as described above.
  7. Record findings: note the nail and skin condition and any products used on the client record card.

Hygiene during client preparation

  • Hand hygiene: The technician washes or sanitises the hands before and after each client.
  • Clean towels: Use disposable or freshly laundered towels for each client.
  • Disinfected tools: Metal clippers, scissors and nippers are cleaned and disinfected or sterilised before each client.
  • Porous items: Emery boards and buffers cannot be disinfected properly, so they are used on one client only, then given to the client or discarded.
  • Clean workstation: Wipe the work area with disinfectant between clients.
  • Protective equipment: Wear disposable gloves where there are cuts or infections, using a fresh pair for each client.
