Preparation for manicure and pedicure services is fundamental for cosmetology professionals to deliver safe, hygienic, and high-quality treatments. This chapter focuses on essential foundational knowledge and practical measures that practitioners in Kenya must understand before commencing these beauty services. Proper preparation not only enhances client satisfaction but also ensures compliance with health regulations and protects both the technician and client from potential infections. Cosmetologists working in salons, spas, or mobile setups across Nairobi, Mombasa, or Kisumu will find these guidelines integral to their professional practice.

1.1 Definition of Terms

The terms below are the basic language of manicure and pedicure work, used between technicians, on client records and when explaining services to clients. Knowing them precisely helps the technician record client details correctly, carry out the right service and explain it clearly. Example: when a new client asks for "something for my feet", the technician consults her, records the details on a record card and recommends a pedicure.

Record card

A record card is a document, on paper or in a salon's computer system, that holds a client's personal details, nail and skin condition, services received and products used. It lets any technician continue the client's care safely, avoid products the client reacts to and track progress over several visits. The card is updated at every visit and kept confidential, because it contains personal and health information. Example: a returning client mentions that her nails peeled after her last visit, and the technician checks the record card to see which polish remover was used.

Information recorded on a client record card:

  • Personal details: The client's name, phone number and date of first visit, so the salon can contact and identify the client.
  • Medical information: Allergies, skin conditions, diabetes or other conditions that affect what can safely be done.
  • Nail and skin condition: The findings of the nail and skin analysis at each visit.
  • Services and products: The treatment given and the products used, including polish colours.
  • Reactions and notes: Any reaction, complaint or special request, so it is not repeated.
  • Aftercare given: The home care advice the client received.
  • Client signature: The client's confirmation that the information is correct and that they agree to the treatment.

Consultation

Consultation is the discussion between the technician and the client before a service, to find out what the client wants, check the condition of the nails and skin and agree on a suitable treatment. It prevents mistakes and reactions, because the technician learns about allergies, health conditions and expectations before starting. It also builds trust, as the client understands what will be done, how long it will take and what it will cost. Example: during consultation, a client asks for long almond-shaped nails, and the technician explains that her short, weak nails need strengthening first and agrees a plan with her.

  1. Greet the client: welcome the client and seat them comfortably at the consultation area.
  2. Ask about needs: ask what service and finish the client wants, using open questions.
  3. Check health and allergies: ask about allergies, medication, skin conditions and diabetes that may affect the service.
  4. Examine the hands or feet: look at the nails and skin for disorders or diseases that may prevent or change the treatment.
  5. Recommend a service: suggest the treatment and products that suit the client's needs and condition.
  6. Agree time and price: explain how long the service takes and what it costs, so there are no surprises.
  7. Record the details: fill in or update the record card and ask the client to confirm it.

Manicure

A manicure is a cosmetic treatment of the hands and fingernails that cleans, shapes and polishes the nails and cares for the skin of the hands. It keeps the hands neat and the nails healthy, and may include cuticle care, exfoliation, massage and polish or gel. Clients often book manicures before work interviews, weddings and other occasions where their hands will be noticed. Example: a client starting a reception job books a manicure with a pale polish so her hands look neat when she greets visitors.

Pedicure

A pedicure is a cosmetic treatment of the feet and toenails that soaks the feet, removes hard and dead skin, trims and shapes the toenails, and may finish with massage and polish. It keeps the feet soft and comfortable and helps prevent problems such as calluses, cracked heels and ingrown toenails. Clients who stand or walk for long hours, or who wear open shoes in dusty conditions, benefit from regular pedicures. Example: a client who works on her feet all day books a pedicure every few weeks to keep the hard skin on her heels under control.

Other terms used in manicure and pedicure

  • Cuticle: The thin layer of dead skin that sticks to the nail plate near its base, which is gently pushed back and removed during a manicure or pedicure.
  • Eponychium: The living skin at the base of the nail, which seals the nail fold against infection and must never be cut.
  • Nail plate: The hard, visible part of the nail made mainly of keratin, which protects the fingertip; its condition guides the choice of products.
  • Nail bed: The skin beneath the nail plate, rich in blood vessels, which supports the nail; it is handled gently to avoid pain and injury.
  • Free edge: The part of the nail plate that extends beyond the fingertip or toe, which is trimmed and filed to shape.
  • Contraindication: A condition, such as an infection or open wound, that means a treatment must not be done or must be changed.
  • Cuticle pusher: A tool with a flat end used to push back the cuticle gently and expose the nail plate.
