Compiled by: John Kiprono

Performing post manicure and pedicure service procedures is a critical phase in cosmetology that ensures client safety, prolongs the life of tools and equipment, and maintains a hygienic work environment. Proper cleaning and sanitation after each client session protect both the cosmetologist and the client from infections and cross-contamination. In Kenya, where public health standards are emphasized by bodies such as the Ministry of Health and the Kenya Bureau of Standards, adherence to thorough post-service protocols enhances professionalism and builds client trust in salons and spas.

3.1 Clean tools and equipment

Cleaning tools and equipment after manicure and pedicure services prevents the spread of infection between clients and keeps the tools in good working condition. Making a tool safe passes through clear stages: cleaning removes visible dirt, disinfection kills most micro-organisms, sterilising destroys all of them including spores, and correct storage keeps the tool safe until it is used again. Single-use items such as orange sticks, emery boards, toe separators, foot spa liners and disposable gloves are never cleaned for reuse: they are discarded after one client. Example: after a pedicure, the technician discards the used orange stick and toe separators, washes the cuticle nippers and foot file, disinfects or sterilises them and stores them in a clean, closed container.

Cleaning

Cleaning is the physical removal of nail dust, skin debris, oils and product residue from tools using water, detergent and a brush. It always comes first, because dirt and skin particles shield micro-organisms from disinfectants and sterilisers. Cleaning also stops residue from building up, which blunts and corrodes tools. Example: after a manicure, the technician scrubs the cuticle pusher and nippers with a small brush in warm soapy water to remove every trace of skin and oil before disinfecting them.

  1. Put on gloves: wear a fresh pair of disposable gloves to protect your hands from debris and chemicals.
  2. Discard single-use items: throw away orange sticks, emery boards, buffers, toe separators and liners used on the client.
  3. Remove loose debris: brush nail dust and skin off the tools over a bin.
  4. Wash: scrub metal tools in warm water with detergent, using a small brush to clean the joints and jaws of nippers.
  5. Rinse: rinse the tools under running water to remove all detergent.
  6. Dry: dry the tools with a clean, disposable paper towel so water does not dilute the disinfectant.
  7. Inspect: check each tool for rust, damage or blunt edges, and remove damaged tools from use.
Cleaning methods for different items
  • Metal tools: Nippers, clippers, cuticle pushers and metal foot files are washed with detergent and a brush, then disinfected or sterilised.
  • Nail brushes: Washed in warm soapy water, rinsed and dried bristles-down to prevent fungal growth.
  • Foot spas and basins: Drained, scrubbed with detergent to remove skin and residue, rinsed, then disinfected.
  • Finger bowls: Emptied, washed with detergent, rinsed and disinfected.
  • Porous items: Orange sticks, emery boards and pumice stones that cannot be disinfected properly are used on one client only, then given to the client or discarded.

Disinfection

Disinfection is the use of a chemical disinfectant to kill or inactivate most disease-causing micro-organisms on a cleaned tool or surface. It does not destroy all spores, so it is used for tools that touch only unbroken skin, while tools that may cut the skin need sterilising. The disinfectant must be diluted correctly and left in contact with the tool for the full contact time on the label. Example: cleaned cuticle pushers are placed fully under the liquid in a covered disinfectant jar for the time stated on the label, then rinsed and dried before use.

  1. Prepare the solution: mix the disinfectant with water exactly as the label directs, wearing gloves and eye protection.
  2. Label the container: write the date of mixing on the container, so you know when to replace the solution.
  3. Immerse the tools: place cleaned, dry tools fully under the liquid, opening hinged tools so the solution reaches every surface.
  4. Time the contact: leave the tools for the full contact time on the label.
  5. Remove and rinse: lift the tools out with tongs or gloved hands and rinse them if the label says so.
  6. Dry: dry the tools with a clean paper towel or let them air-dry on a clean surface.
  7. Replace the solution: change the disinfectant as often as the label directs, or sooner if it becomes cloudy or dirty.
Common disinfectants
Name Specification Use
Isopropyl alcohol 70% solution, flammable, evaporates quickly Wiping and immersing metal tools
Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) Diluted as directed on the label, corrosive to metal Disinfecting basins, bowls and plastic items
Quaternary ammonium compounds Diluted as directed on the label, non-corrosive Immersing tools and wiping surfaces
Hospital-grade salon disinfectant Ready-to-use or concentrate, kills bacteria, fungi and viruses Immersing tools and disinfecting foot spas
Disinfectant wipes Pre-soaked, single-use Wiping lamps, handles and surfaces between clients

sterilizing

Sterilising is the process that destroys all micro-organisms, including bacterial spores, on a tool. It is used for metal tools that can break the skin, such as cuticle nippers and pushers, because these can carry infections that a disinfectant may not fully kill. The most reliable method is the autoclave, which uses steam under pressure. Example: at the end of each day, a nail bar cleans its cuticle nippers, seals them in sterilisation pouches and runs them through the autoclave so they are sterile for the next morning.

Sterilising equipment
Name Specification Use
Autoclave Steam under pressure, cycle set by the maker Sterilising heat-resistant metal tools
Dry heat steriliser Hot-air oven, cycle set by the maker Sterilising metal tools that must stay dry
Sterilisation pouches Sealed paper or plastic, with a colour-change indicator Holding tools during sterilising and keeping them sterile afterwards
Ultrasonic cleaner Tank of cleaning solution with sound vibration Loosening debris from joints before sterilising
UV cabinet Closed cabinet with ultraviolet light Storing already sterilised tools; it does not sterilise them
Procedure for autoclaving
  1. Clean first: wash and dry each tool, as an autoclave cannot sterilise through dirt.
  2. Open hinged tools: open nippers and clippers so steam reaches the jaws and joints.
  3. Pack in pouches: seal the tools in sterilisation pouches with indicators, without overfilling.
  4. Load the autoclave: place pouches in a single layer so steam can circulate.
  5. Run the cycle: run the full cycle the maker sets for wrapped instruments, without opening the door early.
  6. Check the indicators: confirm the indicator has changed colour, and re-process any pouch where it has not.
  7. Dry and cool: let the pouches dry and cool before handling.
  8. Record: note the date and cycle in the sterilisation log.

Storage

Storage is keeping cleaned, disinfected or sterilised tools in a way that protects them from dust, moisture and contact with used items until they are needed. Poor storage undoes all the earlier stages, because a sterile tool left in an open tray picks up dust and micro-organisms. Tools must be completely dry before storage to prevent rust on metal and mould on brushes. Example: a technician keeps sterilised nippers sealed in their pouches inside a closed drawer, and opens each pouch only in front of the client.

  • Closed containers: Store disinfected tools in clean, covered containers or drawers.
  • Sealed pouches: Keep sterilised tools in their sealed pouches until use, and re-process any pouch that is torn or wet.
  • Separate clean and used: Keep clean tools well apart from used ones, in clearly marked containers.
  • Dry conditions: Store tools in a cool, dry place away from sinks and steam.
  • Labelling: Label containers by tool type and cleaning date so stock is used in order.
  • Clean storage areas: Wipe and disinfect drawers, shelves and containers regularly.

Care of tools after cleaning

  • Oiling joints: Apply a drop of oil to the joints of nippers and clippers so they open and close smoothly.
  • Sharpening: Have nippers sharpened or replaced when they tear the skin instead of cutting cleanly.
  • Replacing worn tools: Replace rusty, pitted or cracked tools, as they cannot be cleaned properly.
  • Checking equipment: Check that autoclaves and foot spas work correctly and are serviced as the maker directs.
  • Restocking disposables: Keep enough single-use items in stock so no item is ever reused.
