Surface drapings play a vital role in the aesthetics and functionality of accommodation spaces. In hotels, lodges, and guesthouses across Kenya, well-executed drapery enhances the guest experience by creating an inviting atmosphere while also serving practical purposes such as privacy and light control. Professionals in accommodation operations must understand the various types of drapings available to select and apply the most appropriate styles that align with the establishment’s décor and service standards. This chapter explores the main types of surface drapings used in accommodation settings, focusing on their distinct characteristics and applications.
Surface draping is the arrangement of fabric over furniture, walls, beds or other surfaces to achieve a decorative or functional effect in guest areas. Housekeeping staff select the type of draping according to the surface, the occasion and the impression the establishment wants to create.
Towel draping folds and arranges towels into decorative shapes, most often placed on a guest bed or vanity as a welcoming touch after the room has been serviced. Common shapes include the swan, the heart, the fan and the simple roll. The towel must be clean, well pressed and free of tears before it is shaped, and the fold must come undone easily without damaging the fabric.
Medical surgical draping covers a patient and the surrounding work area with sterile fabric or disposable sheeting before a procedure, keeping the area free of contamination. This style belongs to a clinical setting rather than a guest room, but housekeeping staff in an establishment with a sick bay or first-aid room may be asked to supply and launder draping sheets to the same standard: the sheet must be sterile, fluid-resistant and large enough to cover the full work area with a wide margin.
Artistic or geography draping arranges fabric to form decorative shapes, patterns or representations, such as a map outline, an emblem or a themed display, over a wall, table or stage backdrop for a cultural event, exhibition or themed function. The fabric is pinned, pleated or layered over a frame or directly onto the surface to form the intended shape, and the colours chosen usually reflect the theme of the event.
