Providing floral services is an essential aspect of housekeeping operations in accommodation establishments, enhancing the guest experience by adding aesthetic value and a welcoming atmosphere. In Kenya's hospitality industry, where competition is intense, well-executed floral arrangements contribute significantly to the overall impression of cleanliness, professionalism, and attention to detail. This chapter explores the foundational concepts of floral services, including their role, types, and the skills required to deliver quality floral arrangements within accommodation facilities.

3.1 Introduction

Floral services in accommodation operations involve selecting, arranging and maintaining flowers to enhance the appearance of guest rooms, lobbies and event spaces. This topic introduces what floral arrangement means, the principles that guide good arrangement and the basic shapes used to organise flowers within a display.

Definition

Floral arrangement is the practice of selecting, cutting and placing flowers and foliage together in a container to produce a balanced, attractive display. In an accommodation setting, it ranges from a simple vase of flowers for a guest room to a more elaborate display for a lobby or event space.

Principles of floral arrangements

Good floral arrangement follows a set of design principles that guide how flowers, foliage and containers are combined.

  • Balance: the even distribution of visual weight across the arrangement, whether through a symmetrical or an asymmetrical design.
  • Proportion: the sizing of the arrangement and its flowers relative to the container and to the space where it will stand, such as a smaller display for a side table and a larger one for a lobby.
  • Focal point: a dominant flower or grouping that draws the eye and anchors the rest of the arrangement around it.
  • Rhythm: the repetition of a colour, flower type or shape that leads the eye smoothly through the arrangement.
  • Colour harmony: the thoughtful combination of flower and foliage colours so the arrangement looks coordinated rather than clashing.

Basic floral arrangement shapes

Floral arrangements are commonly built around a small number of recognised shapes that guide how the flowers are placed.

  • Round: flowers arranged in a dome shape of even height all around, suited to a centrepiece viewed from every side.
  • Triangular: flowers arranged to form a triangle, tall in the centre and tapering outward, giving a formal, balanced look.
  • Vertical: flowers arranged with height as the main feature, drawing the eye upward, suited to a narrow space such as a corridor table.
  • Horizontal: flowers arranged low and wide, suited to a long table or a space viewed mainly from one side.
  • Cascading: flowers arranged to flow downward over the edge of the container, giving a flowing, dramatic effect suited to a prominent display.
