This chapter focuses on preparing the establishment facility in accommodation operations, emphasizing the foundational standards and ethical frameworks that govern professional conduct. For housekeeping professionals in Kenyan hotels, lodges, and guest houses, understanding organizational codes of conduct is critical to maintaining service quality, safeguarding guest welfare, and fostering a respectful workplace. The chapter explores how adherence to these codes supports operational efficiency and reputation management in the hospitality sector. Practical insights are drawn from diverse Kenyan hospitality settings to contextualize these principles.
Housekeeping is the department responsible for keeping an accommodation establishment's guest rooms and public areas clean, orderly and welcoming at all times. Preparing the facility properly, understanding the department's structure, and bringing the right personal qualities to the work are the foundation everything else in this unit builds on.
Housekeeping is the function within an accommodation establishment responsible for cleanliness, orderliness and the general upkeep of guest rooms and public areas. A guest room is any room let to a guest for their stay, while a public area is a shared space such as a lobby or corridor that housekeeping also maintains even though no single guest occupies it.
Housekeeping protects the guest's health and comfort, since a clean, well-kept room reduces the risk of illness and gives the guest confidence in the establishment. It also protects the property's furnishings and equipment from premature wear, and a consistently clean establishment builds the reputation that brings guests back.
A housekeeping department is typically led by an executive housekeeper or housekeeping manager, with supervisors overseeing room attendants, public area cleaners and laundry staff. This structure gives each level clear reporting lines, so a room attendant who finds a maintenance fault reports it to their supervisor rather than leaving it unaddressed.
Housekeeping's core duties include servicing guest rooms, cleaning and maintaining public areas, managing linen and supplies, and reporting any maintenance issue found while working. A room attendant who notices a dripping tap, for example, reports it immediately so maintenance can fix it before the next guest checks in. Organisational codes of conduct, which set the standards housekeeping staff follow in their duties, are covered in full under Organizational codes of conduct.
Housekeeping relies on staff working together smoothly, since room attendants, supervisors, laundry staff and other departments must coordinate to have rooms ready on time. A room attendant who finishes their own section early may help a colleague still working through a heavier load, keeping the whole floor on schedule.
Disagreements occasionally arise over task allocation, shift timing or how a job was done, and housekeeping staff are expected to raise these calmly with a supervisor rather than let them affect their work. Addressing a disagreement promptly and fairly keeps the department running smoothly and protects working relationships.
Housekeeping staff represent the establishment whenever they interact with a guest, whether greeting them in a corridor or responding to a request left at the door. Being polite, attentive and quick to act on a guest's request, such as extra towels, reflects well on the whole establishment.
Certain personal qualities mark out an effective housekeeper, beyond simply knowing how to clean. These qualities, covered individually below, shape how reliably and professionally the work gets done.
Attention to detail means noticing the small things a guest would notice too, such as a smudge on a mirror or a missed corner under a bed. A housekeeper who checks their work carefully before moving to the next room catches these before the guest does.
Time management means completing each room within the time allotted for a shift so that every room on the list is ready when needed. A housekeeper who paces their work evenly across a shift avoids rushing the last few rooms and leaving them below standard.
Housekeeping staff are trusted with access to guest rooms and property while guests are away, so being reliable and trustworthy is essential to the role. Turning up for every shift on time and never touching a guest's belongings beyond what the job requires earns that trust.
Organisational skills show in how a housekeeper manages their trolley, supplies and schedule through a shift, so nothing is missing or out of place when it is needed. A well-organised trolley, stocked before the shift starts, saves repeated trips back to the supply room.
Loyalty means supporting the establishment's standards and reputation even when no one is directly supervising the work. A loyal housekeeper reports a problem honestly rather than hiding it, because they see the establishment's good name as something worth protecting.
Clear communication lets a housekeeper report a maintenance issue accurately, pass on a guest's request to the right department, or explain a delay to a supervisor. Describing a problem specifically, such as naming the exact fixture that is faulty, helps it get fixed faster.
Flexibility means adjusting to a change in schedule, an unexpected task, or a guest's request for something outside the normal routine. A housekeeper asked to prepare an extra room at short notice because of a late booking manages this without the rest of their work suffering.
Professionalism covers a housekeeper's conduct, appearance and attitude while on duty, including wearing the uniform correctly and speaking respectfully to guests and colleagues. Behaving professionally even during a difficult shift protects both the housekeeper's own standing and the establishment's image.
Problem solving means handling an unexpected situation, such as a stubborn stain or a missing supply, without needing a supervisor for every small decision. A housekeeper who tries a sensible alternative cleaning method on an unfamiliar stain, rather than leaving it, keeps the work moving.
Integrity means acting honestly at all times, particularly around guest property encountered while cleaning a room. A housekeeper who finds an item a guest left behind reports it through the lost property procedure rather than keeping it.

It begins by outlining the importance of organizational codes of conduct that guide professional behavior and standards. Emphasis is placed on maintaining hygiene, safety, and control measures to ensure a secure and healthy environment. Various types of establishment facilities are described alongside the critical role of facility and property maintenance in preserving operational integrity. Prior preparation tasks are highlighted to ensure efficiency before cleaning commences. The chapter thoroughly explores cleaning by defining key terms, explaining fundamental principles, and categorizing different cleaning types supported by appropriate equipment and materials. Attention is given to the characteristics of surfaces and finishes, detailing methods for cleaning diverse surfaces and furnishings. Finally, the chapter covers the selection of supplies and amenities, the role of interior decoration and theme interpretation in enhancing the facility’s appeal, and the necessary post-cleaning tasks that complete the housekeeping process.
