Laundry operations in accommodation settings demand precise handling of fabrics and articles to maintain quality, hygiene, and customer satisfaction. Understanding the terminology related to finishing articles and fabrics is fundamental for laundry professionals in Kenyan hotels, lodges, and guest houses. This chapter introduces key terms that define the processes and materials encountered in finishing laundry items, ensuring that staff can communicate effectively and apply best practices in their daily routines.
The terminology used in finishing articles and fabrics is specialised and essential for accurate communication among laundry staff and management. These terms cover the processes applied to articles after washing and drying, and familiarity with them supports consistency in service delivery and helps in troubleshooting fabric care issues.
Finishing is the general name for the processes applied to an article after washing and drying to restore or improve its appearance, texture and usability, such as ironing, pressing, steaming and folding. It prepares linen, uniforms and other articles for use or storage in a presentable, hygienic condition.
Ironing is the use of a heated flat iron moved across the surface of a fabric to remove wrinkles and leave it smooth. It is the most familiar finishing method and is used on flat articles such as sheets and on garments with a simple shape.
Pressing is the application of heat and pressure together, usually by a machine that clamps or rolls the fabric, to flatten and shape an article in one motion rather than by moving a hand iron across it. It is used on items that need a sharp, even finish, such as uniforms and tablecloths.
Steaming applies heat and moisture together, through a jet of steam, to relax the fibres of a fabric and remove wrinkles without the direct contact of an iron's sole plate. It is gentler than ironing or pressing and suits delicate articles that could be marked or scorched by direct heat.
Foaming applies a light, aerated cleaning or conditioning agent to the surface of a fabric before finishing, helping to lift remaining soil or soften the fibres so the finishing step that follows produces a better result.
Fabric refers to any material made by weaving, knitting or bonding fibres together, used to produce the linen, uniforms and other textile articles found in an accommodation establishment. Fabric quality directly affects guest comfort and the durability of linen.
An article is any textile item requiring cleaning and finishing, including bed sheets, pillowcases, curtains, tablecloths and staff uniforms, each needing handling suited to its fabric and use.

Various methods of finishing were examined, highlighting the techniques used to restore and enhance fabric appearance and texture after washing. The chapter also classified finishing equipment, detailing the different machines and tools essential for effective finishing processes. The airing process was described as a critical step to remove moisture and odors, ensuring fabrics are fresh before further handling. The importance of airing was emphasized, focusing on its role in maintaining fabric quality and preventing mildew. Finally, the chapter covered proper folding and storing practices, which help preserve the condition of finished articles and facilitate efficient storage and handling in laundry operations.
