Compiled by: John Kiprono

Cleaning and disinfecting barbering tools and equipment is a critical post-service procedure that ensures client safety, maintains hygiene standards, and prolongs the lifespan of barbering instruments. In Kenya's cosmetology industry, where regulatory bodies such as the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KeBS) and the Ministry of Health enforce stringent hygiene protocols, proper sanitation practices are essential to prevent the spread of infections including fungal, bacterial, and viral diseases. Barbering professionals working in salons, hotels, and health service facilities must adopt thorough cleaning and disinfecting techniques to protect both clients and themselves. This chapter explores the systematic processes and best practices for cleaning, disinfecting, and maintaining barbering tools within the Kenyan context.

3.1 Cleaning, Disinfecting Barbering Tools and Equipment

Cleaning and disinfecting barbering tools are two separate stages that make tools safe to use on the next client. Cleaning removes hair, skin flakes, oils and product, and disinfecting then kills most of the micro-organisms left on the cleaned surface. Combs, clippers and brushes touch the hair, scalp and skin of every client, so they can spread infections such as ringworm if they are not cleaned and disinfected after each use. Example: between two clients, a barber brushes the hair out of his clippers, cleans and disinfects the blades, and puts a freshly disinfected comb and neck brush at the station.

Combs

Combs collect hair, dandruff flakes, oils and styling products as they pass through the hair, so they are cleaned and disinfected after every client. Most barbering combs are plastic, so they are disinfected with products that do not damage plastic, and combs with broken teeth are discarded. Example: after a scissor-over-comb cut, the barber pulls the hair out of the comb, washes it and places it in the disinfectant jar.

  1. Remove hair strands manually or with a comb cleaner tool.
  2. Soak in warm water with detergent for 10 to 15 minutes to loosen oils and product.
  3. Scrub with a small brush between the teeth to remove residual oils and dirt.
  4. Rinse under running water to remove detergent.
  5. Immerse fully in a suitable disinfectant for the contact time stated on the label.
  6. Rinse with clean water if the product instructions require it, to remove chemical residues.
  7. Air dry on a clean towel, then store in a clean, closed container.

Clippers

Clippers are electrical tools, so only the blades and attachments are washed or immersed, never the motor body. The blades are cleaned of hair and grease, disinfected and then oiled so they stay sharp and do not rust. Example: at the end of a fade, the barber brushes out the clipper blades, sprays them with a clipper disinfectant, wipes them and adds a few drops of oil.

  1. Unplug the clippers, or switch off cordless models, before cleaning.
  2. Remove loose hair from the blades with a small brush.
  3. Detach removable blades where possible for thorough cleaning.
  4. Clean the blades and guards with warm water and detergent, keeping water away from the motor body.
  5. Disinfect detached blades and guards by immersing them in a suitable disinfectant, such as 70% alcohol, for the contact time on the label, or spray fixed blades with a clipper disinfectant.
  6. Wipe the clipper body with a cloth dampened with disinfectant.
  7. Dry the blades completely with a clean cloth to prevent rust.
  8. Apply clipper oil to the blades and run the clippers briefly to spread it.

Barbering brushes

Barbering brushes include the neck brush, foam (shaving) brush, hair brush, tint brush and powder brush. Their bristles trap hair, lather, product and skin cells, and can spread infection if they are not cleaned and dried properly. Brushes with wooden handles or natural bristles are not soaked for long, as water damages them. Example: after a shave, the barber rinses all the lather out of the foam brush, disinfects it and hangs it bristles-down to dry before the next client.

  1. Remove hair and debris: shake out the brush and pull loose hair from the bristles.
  2. Wash: swirl the bristles in warm water with mild detergent or shampoo.
  3. Rinse thoroughly: rinse until no lather or product remains.
  4. Disinfect: dip or spray the bristles with a disinfectant suitable for the bristle and handle material, for the contact time on the label.
  5. Rinse if required: rinse off the disinfectant if the instructions say so.
  6. Dry bristles-down: shake out excess water and dry with the bristles pointing down so water does not soak into the handle.
  7. Store dry: keep brushes in a clean, closed container once completely dry.

Cleaning and disinfecting compared

Cleaning is the physical removal of dirt, hair, oils and debris using water and detergent, while disinfecting is the chemical process that kills or inactivates most disease-causing micro-organisms. Cleaning always comes first, because organic matter such as skin particles or blood shields micro-organisms from the disinfectant.

Aspect Cleaning Disinfecting
Purpose Remove visible dirt and debris Kill or inactivate micro-organisms
Method Physical action with water and detergent Chemical treatment with disinfectants
Effect on microbes Removes many but does not kill them Kills most on the cleaned surface
Timing Always done first Done after thorough cleaning
Materials Brushes, water, detergents Disinfectant solutions and sprays

Common disinfectants and their uses

Name Specification Use in barbering
Isopropyl alcohol 70% solution, flammable, evaporates quickly Disinfecting clipper blades and other metal tools
Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) Diluted as directed on the label, corrosive to metal Disinfecting plastic combs and suitable surfaces
Quaternary ammonium compounds Diluted as directed on the label, non-corrosive Immersing combs and wiping surfaces
Phenolic disinfectants Diluted as directed on the label Disinfecting surfaces and some tools
Clipper disinfectant sprays Ready-to-use aerosol or spray Spraying fixed clipper blades between clients

Application techniques

  • Soaking: Combs and detached blades are immersed in disinfectant solution for the contact time on the label.
  • Spraying: Fixed clipper blades are sprayed with a clipper disinfectant after cleaning, then dried and oiled to prevent rust.
  • Wiping: Equipment that cannot be immersed, such as clipper bodies, is wiped with a disinfectant-dampened cloth.
  • Rinsing: Some disinfectants must be rinsed off to prevent residues that might irritate skin or damage tools.
  • Fresh solutions: Disinfectant solutions are prepared as directed and replaced as the label instructs, as used solutions become weak and contaminated.

Care of tools after disinfection

  • Regular inspection: Check blades and combs for rust, dullness or damage before and after cleaning.
  • Sharpening: Have clipper blades sharpened or replaced when they pull or cut unevenly.
  • Lubrication: Oil clipper blades regularly to reduce wear and prevent corrosion.
  • Complete drying: Make sure tools are completely dry before storage to prevent rust and microbial growth.
  • Clean storage: Store disinfected tools in clean, covered containers, separate from used tools.
