Barbering service is a critical aspect of cosmetology that involves grooming and styling hair, facial hair, and providing related treatments tailored to clients' needs. In Kenya, the demand for professional barbering services has grown significantly-driven by urbanization and increasing awareness of personal grooming. This chapter lays the foundation for delivering excellent barbering services by focusing on essential preparatory steps, including understanding key terminology and conducting effective client consultations. Mastery of these aspects ensures cosmetologists can meet client expectations while maintaining high standards of hygiene and professionalism.

1.1 Definition of terms

Understanding fundamental barbering terminology is crucial for effective communication within the profession and with clients. Precise knowledge of these terms enables barbers to describe services clearly, follow instructions accurately and keep accurate records, so that every client receives the service they asked for, safely.

Consultation

Consultation is the discussion between the barber and the client before a service, in which the barber finds out what the client wants, looks at the hair, scalp and skin, and agrees on the cut, shave or treatment to be given. It helps the barber recommend a suitable style, spot conditions that make a service unsafe, and prevent misunderstanding about the result or the price. Example: before a skin fade, the barber asks the client how short he wants the sides, checks his scalp for cuts or bumps and confirms the price before switching on the clippers. How to carry out a consultation is covered in Client consultation.

Barbering

Barbering refers to the professional practice of cutting, trimming, styling and grooming hair and facial hair, mainly for men and boys. It includes techniques such as haircutting with clippers and scissors, shaving, beard shaping, outlining, scalp massage and facial grooming. Barbering is not only about appearance: it also involves keeping the scalp and facial skin healthy and following strict hygiene to prevent infections. Example: a client may visit a barbershop for a low cut, a beard trim and a hot-towel shave in a single appointment.

Client record card

A client record card is a written or digital record kept by the barbershop for each client, showing personal details, the services done, the clipper settings and products used, and any skin or scalp problems or reactions noted. It helps the barber repeat a cut exactly, avoid products the client reacts to, and keep evidence of what was done. Example: when a regular client asks for "the same as last time", the barber checks his record card and sees a number 1 guard on the sides, a number 3 on top and no aftershave containing alcohol because of past razor irritation.

Information recorded on a client record card
  • Personal details: Name, phone number and date of the first visit.
  • Service details: The cut or shave done, the date and the barber who did it.
  • Clipper and cutting details: Guard numbers, fade or taper height and any outline or design.
  • Products used: Shaving cream, aftershave, finishing aids and treatments applied.
  • Skin and scalp notes: Conditions observed, such as razor bumps, dandruff or sensitive skin.
  • Allergies and reactions: Any reaction to products or tools, so they are avoided in future.
  • Client preferences and comments: Preferred styles and feedback after the service.

Other related terms

  • Hygiene: Practices that keep the barber, the client and the workplace clean, such as washing hands and using clean towels.
  • Sanitation: Keeping the barbershop environment clean and free from conditions that spread disease.
  • Disinfection: Using chemical products to kill most micro-organisms on tools and surfaces.
  • Sterilisation: Destroying all micro-organisms on an item, usually with heat or special equipment.
  • Fade: A haircut in which the hair gradually becomes shorter towards the neck and ears, blending into the skin.
  • Outline (line-up): Shaping a sharp edge along the hairline, sideburns and beard.
