Compiled by: Esther Ndungu

Post-plaiting and braiding procedures are critical in maintaining salon hygiene, client safety, and the longevity of styling tools. In Kenya’s cosmetology industry, where salons and barbershops serve diverse clientele daily, proper cleaning and disinfection of tools prevent cross-contamination and infections such as scalp ringworm or bacterial folliculitis. This chapter focuses on the essential steps to clean, disinfect, and maintain plaiting and braiding equipment, ensuring compliance with health standards and enhancing client trust.

3.1 Cleaning, disinfecting plaiting and braiding tools and equipment

Cleaning removes hair, dirt, product build-up and skin flakes from tools, while disinfecting uses a chemical product to kill the micro-organisms that remain on the cleaned surface. Both steps are needed after every client, because tools pass from one head to the next and can spread scalp infections such as ringworm, as well as lice. Each tool is cleaned and disinfected according to its material and design. Example: a stylist finishing a set of cornrows removes the hair from her comb and crochet needle, washes and disinfects them, and wipes down the blow dryer before the next client sits down.

Combs

Combs collect hair, scalp flakes and styling products as they pass through the hair, so they must be cleaned and disinfected after every client. Plastic combs are washed and then immersed in a disinfectant that does not damage plastic, while metal combs are disinfected and dried well to prevent rust. Example: after detangling and parting a client's hair, the stylist pulls the trapped hair out of her rat-tail and wide-tooth combs before washing them.

  1. Remove hair: pull trapped hair from between the teeth with the fingers or a small brush.
  2. Wash: wash the combs in warm water with detergent, scrubbing between the teeth with a small brush to remove gel and oil build-up.
  3. Rinse: rinse under running water to remove soap and loosened dirt.
  4. Disinfect: immerse the combs completely in a suitable disinfectant for the contact time stated on the product label.
  5. Rinse again if required: rinse off the disinfectant if the product instructions say so.
  6. Dry: dry on a clean towel or paper towel, or allow to air dry.
  7. Store: place the combs in a clean, closed container until the next use.
  8. Inspect: discard combs with broken teeth or rough edges that could snag hair or scratch the scalp.

Blow dryers

A blow dryer is an electrical appliance, so it is never immersed in water or liquid disinfectant. Instead, the outer surfaces that touch the stylist's hands and the client's hair are wiped clean and disinfected, and the air filter is cleared of hair and dust so the dryer does not overheat. Example: at the end of the day, a stylist unplugs the blow dryer, lets it cool, wipes the handle and nozzle with disinfectant and removes fluff from the rear filter.

  1. Unplug and cool: switch off, unplug and allow the dryer to cool completely before cleaning.
  2. Remove attachments: take off the nozzle or comb attachment.
  3. Clean attachments: wash removable plastic attachments in warm soapy water, disinfect them and dry them fully before refitting.
  4. Wipe the body: wipe the handle and body with a cloth dampened with a suitable disinfectant, without letting liquid enter the vents.
  5. Clean the filter: remove hair and dust from the air intake filter with a dry brush, following the manufacturer's instructions.
  6. Check the cord and plug: look for cracks, exposed wires or loose plugs and remove a damaged dryer from use.
  7. Store: store the dryer in a dry place with the cord loosely coiled, not wrapped tightly around the body.

Crotchets

Crochet needles are small latch hooks that pass under cornrows and touch both the hair and the scalp, so hair and product can become trapped around the hook and latch. They are cleaned with care so the latch keeps working, then disinfected and dried well because most are made of metal. Example: after installing crochet curls, the stylist picks the extension fibres out of the latch before soaking the needle in disinfectant.

  1. Remove hair and fibres: carefully pull trapped hair and extension fibres from the hook and latch.
  2. Wash: scrub the needle with a small brush in warm soapy water, opening and closing the latch to clean underneath it.
  3. Rinse: rinse under running water.
  4. Disinfect: immerse the needle in a disinfectant suitable for metal, such as 70% alcohol, for the time stated on the product label.
  5. Dry thoroughly: dry completely to prevent rust, especially around the latch hinge.
  6. Check the latch: make sure the latch opens and closes freely and the hook is not bent.
  7. Store: keep the needle in a clean, closed case.

Importance of cleaning and disinfecting

  • Removal of visible debris: Cleaning eliminates hair strands, dirt and skin flakes that can harbour micro-organisms.
  • Effective disinfection: Disinfectants work only on clean surfaces, because dirt and oil shield micro-organisms from the chemical.
  • Elimination of pathogens: Disinfection kills bacteria, viruses and fungi that can cause scalp infections.
  • Enhanced tool life: Dirt and residues can corrode metal parts or degrade plastic, so cleaning extends the useful life of tools.
  • Protection of stylists and clients: Clean tools reduce the risk of infections passing between people in the salon.
  • Professional image: Visible hygiene reassures clients and builds the salon's reputation for safety and care.

General cleaning considerations

  • Plastic tools: Plastic is damaged by harsh chemicals and high temperatures, so mild detergents, warm water and plastic-safe disinfectants are used.
  • Metal tools: Metal tolerates stronger disinfectants such as alcohol, but must be dried to prevent rust; bleach corrodes metal and is not used on it.
  • Tools with moving parts: Hinges and latches are cleaned carefully so residue does not stop them working.
  • Gloves: Wear disposable gloves when cleaning and disinfecting, and discard them after use.
  • Fresh solutions: Prepare disinfectant solutions as directed and replace them as the label instructs, since used solutions become contaminated and weak.

Common disinfectants and their uses

Name Specification Use
70% isopropyl alcohol Flammable liquid, broad-spectrum, evaporates quickly Wiping and immersing metal tools such as crochet needles and metal combs
Sodium hypochlorite (bleach) Diluted as directed on the label, corrosive to metal Soaking plastic tools only
Quaternary ammonium compounds Non-corrosive, broad-spectrum Immersion of plastic combs and wiping surfaces
Phenolic disinfectants Effective against fungi and many viruses Disinfecting salon surfaces and some tools
Hydrogen peroxide 3% Mild disinfectant, low toxicity Soaking small tools where suitable

Application techniques

  • Immersion: Completely submerge tools in disinfectant solution for the contact time stated on the label.
  • Wiping: Use a disinfectant-dampened cloth for equipment that cannot be immersed, such as the body of a blow dryer.
  • Spraying: Spray disinfectant on suitable surfaces and allow it to stay wet for the stated contact time.
  • Follow manufacturer's instructions: Concentration and contact time must be observed to avoid tool damage or ineffective disinfection.
  • Storage after disinfection: Store tools in clean, dry, closed containers to prevent recontamination before next use.

Chapter Summary

This chapter focused on the essential steps involved in the post plaiting and braiding service procedure. It began with the importance of cleaning and disinfecting plaiting and braiding tools and equipment to prevent the spread of infections and maintain hygiene standards. The discussion then moved to the cleaning of the workstation, emphasizing the need to create a safe and sanitary environment for both the client and the stylist. Proper cleaning of the workspace ensures that all surfaces are free from hair residues, dust, and any contaminants. Finally, the chapter covered the correct storage of plaiting and braiding recyclable supplies, highlighting how organized storage extends the lifespan of materials and facilitates efficient service delivery. Attention to these procedures not only promotes client safety but also enhances professional reputation in the beauty industry.
