5.1 Handling of identified construction materials

This section breaks down the handling of common materials used in building technology, focusing on concrete, timber, bricks and blocks, steel, and finishing materials.

5.1.1 Handling of Concrete and Cement-Based Materials

Concrete and cement-based materials are fundamental in building construction, used for foundations, walls, slabs, and finishes. Their handling requires careful attention to prevent contamination, premature setting, or strength loss, especially in Kenya’s varied climate conditions.

Storage and Protection

  • Moisture Control: Cement must be stored in dry, moisture-free environments to prevent hydration before use. Exposure to humidity, common in coastal regions like Mombasa, can cause lumps and loss of cement quality.
  • Temperature Management: Extreme heat accelerates cement setting, while very low temperatures can delay curing. In Nairobi’s highland climate, materials should be stored in shaded, well-ventilated areas to moderate temperature impacts.
